Chai, Mate & Rooibos Teas
A fantastic selection of three of the worlds most popular tea alternative drinks. OK so Chai is made with ‘real’ tea, we know, none the less it deserves a category apart as it has its own interesting characteristics. Remember to turn your bag of Chai upside down a few times every so often. The powdered spices can settle at the bottom of the bag during transit or after a period of time on the shelf.
Immensely popular in South America for years Yerba Mate has a flavor that is strongly vegetal, herbal, and grassy, reminiscent of some varieties of green tea. Some consider the flavor to be very agreeable, but it is generally bitter if steeped in boiling water. Thus the birth of flavored mate infusions. Shown now to contain three xanthines (that’s caffeine, theobromine and theophylline for the technical out their) Mate has shown to have a relaxing effect on smooth muscle tissue, and perhaps even a stimulating effect on the heart. Despite its caffeine content being roughly a quarter that found in regular tea!
South African studies conducted over the years have determined that Rooibos tea is high in iron, potassium, zinc, manganese and sodium. As such, any Rooibos based drink is not only great for sipping morning, noon, and night, but for the actively health conscious out there, it also makes a fantastic post workout refresher.
